Donny and Vlad

Description
"Donny and Vlad" is an original mixed-media painting in acrylic, gouache, and ink on canvas.
Borrowing the visual language of a familiar pop-cultural image and reworking it into an overtly contemporary political portrait, the piece places Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin into a composition associated with rebellion, infamy, and cultural unease.
The result is confrontational and intentionally unsettling: a vivid, graphic work that merges political satire with art-historical and music-cultural reference.
Artistic Themes
This piece explores appropriation, power, complicity, and the seductive surface of political image-making. By recasting two of the most controversial political figures of the modern era into an iconic borrowed composition, the work invites viewers to think about the relationship between media myth, celebrity, violence, and historical memory. Its visual tension lies in the collision between stylised pop imagery and a darker message: that political alliances built on ego, authoritarianism, and mutual opportunism can have destructive consequences far beyond the frame.
Artist’s Statement
In "Donny and Vlad", I wanted to use a recognisable visual reference point to create a sharp political intervention.
By replacing the original figures with Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, I’m drawing attention to the theatricality of power and the dangerous intimacy of political relationships that shape global events. This is not a tribute image; it is a warning. The painting suggests a shared trajectory of destruction — a world remade through vanity, aggression, disinformation, and disregard for human cost. I wanted the work to feel immediate, cynical, and visually arresting, while also carrying a sense of menace beneath its stylised surface.
