Stop
Description
Acrylic and guouche on wooden panel. 30x15cm
"Stop" depicts the figure of a woman with her arms raised in a protective, defensive gesture. Her body is turned inward, suggesting tension, fear, and self-preservation. Set against a warm, textured ground of ochres and yellows, the darkened figure and deep red clothing create a striking visual contrast that draws attention to her emotional state. The composition is intentionally spare, with no visible source of danger, allowing the scene to remain open-ended and psychologically charged.
Artistic Theme
This work explores vulnerability, threat, and the instinctive human need for protection. By withholding any explicit detail of what the figure is shielding herself from, "Stop" invites the viewer to confront the unknown and to bring their own experiences, anxieties, or interpretations into the space of the painting. The absence of a defined aggressor shifts the focus from narrative to emotion, emphasizing the internal experience of fear rather than its cause. The painting speaks to themes of personal boundaries, trauma, resilience, and the silent moments in which the body reacts before words can be formed.
Artist’s Statement
In "Stop", I wanted to capture a moment of instinctive defence — the body responding to an unseen threat. The figure’s raised arms act as both shield and signal, suggesting fear, resistance, and the urgent need to protect oneself. By leaving the threat undefined, I aimed to create ambiguity, allowing the viewer to enter the work through their own imagination and emotional understanding. The use of acrylic and gouache on wooden panel helped me build a surface that feels both raw and immediate, reinforcing the tension within the image. This painting is less about a specific event and more about a universal emotional experience: the impulse to recoil, resist, and survive.
